![]() This is a superb book for adults to read to children, a way to teach them, quite painlessly, about customs and imagery related to Halloween from ancient Egypt, Mediterranean cultures, Celtic Druidism, Mexico, and even a cathedral in Paris. The Halloween Tree, while sweeter than his adult literature, is also touched at moments by the cold specter of loss-which is only fitting, of course, for a holiday in honor of the waning of the sun. Bradbury's lyrical prose whooshes along with the pell-mell rhythms of children running at night, screaming and laughing, and the reader is carried along by its sheer exuberance.īradbury's stories about children are always attended by dread-of change, adulthood, death. They ride on a black wind to autumn scenes in distant lands and times, where they witness other ways of celebrating this holiday about the dark time of year. Eight boys set out on a Halloween night and are led into the depths of the past by a tall, mysterious character named Moundshroud. Or Ray Bradbury's classic The Halloween Tree. Special indeed are holiday stories with the right mix of high spirits and subtle mystery to please both adults and children-Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," for example. ![]()

Such a utopian Communist state, however, has never existed. The concept of Communism was first forwarded by Karl Marx, who described it as a utopian state, following a revolution and a proletariat dictatorship, in which there would be no need for a government and everyone would live in equality and a state of happiness. Given the fact that Orwell often drew parallels in his writings between the totalitarian regimes of Stalin and the fascist regimes in Germany and Italy at the time, Animal Farm probably did portray the Soviet Union under Stalin. An alternate interpretation of the novel is that it depicts the general human condition and applies to the political and social conditions in several other countries besides the Soviet Russia. ![]() ![]() ![]() Direct parallels can be drawn between several characters in Animal Farm and real life people, e.g., Napoleon: Stalin Snowball: Trotsky Squealer: Goebbels. ![]() George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945) is a satirical allegory of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the conditions that prevailed in the country under Stalin's dictatorship. ![]() ![]() Weininger, who took the snapshot near Muzot, Switzerland, in 1925. ![]() The frontispiece portrait of Rilke is here reproduced by kind permission of Frau M. But the student will probably care to pursue further some of the astonishing wealth of ideas which the poet here raises. ![]() I have thought it best to group all the explanations which any letters of Rilke necessarily involve, at the end of the book and out of the way indeed, no harm will be done if the ordinary reader ignores them altogether, and enjoys the letters simply for what they are.
